About Rebecca Francis

“Don’t forget- no one else sees the world the way you do, so no one else can tell the stories that you have to tell.”              Charles De Lint

I was born and raised in Utah. As a young child, I grew up hunting with my father and brothers every year. My love for the outdoors flourished as I spent time every year hunting, camping, fishing, boating, hiking etc. I married my husband when I was 22, and instantly became a mother of 5 young children. Lucky for them, I loved to cook for big groups! We had three more children and by the time I was 26, I was a mother of eight, four boys and four girls. I am now 41 and a grandmother to eight beautiful souls, with number nine on the way.

My husband and I love the outdoors and any kind of adventure. Our first date was hiking Mt. Timpanogos, followed by rock climbing the next day. We knew we were perfect for each other because we shared the same passion for the outdoors. We spent the first two weeks of our honeymoon hunting sheep and moose in Alaska, followed by another two weeks in central Utah hunting big bull elk. We hunt elk and deer every year without fail, even through pregnancy, and nursing babies. Our hunting trips are self-guided. We pack in on horses, or with backpacks, to remote areas on public land to where we can hunt mostly by ourselves. I prefer bowhunting, and the animals I have taken with a bow include: a 10 1/2 ft. brown bear, black bear, shiras moose, alaskan moose,  dall sheep, stone sheep, desert bighorn ram, rocky mountain bighorn ram, mule deer, whitetail deer, elk, mountain goat, antelope, arapawa ram, kudu, zebra, black wildebeest, giraffe, springbuck, blesbuck, lynx, badger, and squirrel. I have also taken many of the same species and more with a rifle.  My preferred rifle is the .338 RCM.

This year I fulfilled my dream of harvesting the Grand Slam of North America with my bow.  I became the second woman to achieve this feat following an inspirational woman, Anna Vorisek.  My next goal is to achieve the Super 10 with a bow, and I have only two animals remaining.

After years of hunting, my desire to share the excitement and thrills with others grew.  I wanted to share my passion with everyone, especially other women.  I became a guide in Alaska for Alaska Outfitters three years ago.  Since then, I have guided several women on brown bear, black bear, moose, caribou, and dall sheep.  I recently helped Nicole Reeve with Driven TV fulfill her dream of taking a brown bear with a bow.  I was also blessed to guide Kelsie Burford on Sheep Shape TV to harvest a dall sheep and grizzly bear with her bow.  I recently became a guide in Wyoming working for Offgrid Outdoors.  For me, there is nothing more empowering than sharing that special moment of success with another female who is chasing her dreams.

Hunting is not my only passion however. I am addicted to running, and I run in many races every year including, half marathons, marathons, triathlons, 5k’s, and 10 k’s. I have also competed in several bike races that reach elevations in excess of 10,600 feet. Someday I would really like to compete in an ironman race. I also love to scuba dive, hike, rock climb, ice climb, fish, and swim. My husband and I are both pilots and have flown our plane to Alaska, California, Washington, Idaho, and many other places. Every spring we also love to go jeeping and mountain biking in the red rocks of Moab with our family.

Another sport that my husband and I love is mountaineering. Mountaineering requires using ice axes, ropes, and crampons. We have climbed Mt. Rainier, Mt. Shasta, Mt. Loafer, Mt. Timpanogos, Tetons, Orizaba (18,490 feet), Cotopaxi (19,347 feet), and Chimborazo (20,565 feet). The next few mountains we hope to climb are Denali, Matterhorn, Cho Oyu.

I am a very goal oriented person and once my children were in school all day, I returned to school as well. I graduated from BYU, Magna cum laude, with a bachelor degree in Psychology in 2007, and I graduated from UCDH with honors, also receiving a bachelor degree in Dental Hygiene in 2009.  I have traveled to several countries on health related service missions to donate my time to people in underserved areas. Looking into the eyes of all the beautiful people that are in such desperation for help has touched me so deeply, that I plan to travel to a country each year to give my skills to those in need.

I believe that you should live life to the fullest with no regrets, and push yourself to the limit. If you don’t experience everything you can in life, you’ll miss out on some irreplaceable memories.  Life is so short and so wonderful that I don’t want to miss out on a single second.
